The Gaval is a one piece end-blow ductless flute or a ducted flute. Associated more with the life of a shepherd, it has 2 major characteristics, it is a hollow cylindrical soundbox with holes along the entire length of its body with the holes being round, oval, or, more rarely, square.

Like in any type of Flute, the gaval may vary in design and size. The distence between the holes will determin in which key the Gaval will play in.
